What is a Slot?

A narrow depression, notch, or opening for receiving something, as a coin or a piece of paper. Also: a period of time or position within a schedule or sequence. We arranged the conference meetings for the slots between lunch and the afternoon session.

A slit or opening in a wall or door, especially one through which a curtain or screen may be hung. (in electrical engineering) An elongated channel, in a stator or rotor of a machine, for ventilation or the insertion of windings. (in ice hockey) An unmarked area in front of an opponent’s goal that affords a vantage for an attacking player. (journalism) An interior opening in a copy desk, usually occupied by the chief copy editor.

The space between a main and an auxiliary airfoil in a plane, to provide room for airflow during flight. Also: a gap between an end and a tackle in American football. (slang, informal) A place in the lineup or the lineup of a team, or an individual position in such a line, that provides an advantageous vantage point. The quarterback had a great slot today.

Linguistics

A position having a specific grammatical function within a construction, into which any one of a set of morphemes or morpheme sequences fits. (see slot, n.)

In computing, a location in memory that may be accessed with a data structure called a handle. Typically, the address of a slot is given by a pointer (usually in the form of an integer) that points to the location in the storage medium of the machine where the slot is located. The storage media can be a disk or a memory chip.

T-slot table

The T-slot tables are an extended work area for your universal testing system that offers a convenient way to secure components and structures for performing tensile, compression and flexural tests. The table comes equipped with T-slots that run front-to-back, side-to-side and diagonally. This design allows you to use standard Instron grips, text fixtures and other major accessories without having to remove the T-slot table from the frame. The table is also provided with a mounting bracket for supporting the test frame. See the picture below for an example. You can choose the dimensions for your T-slot table in the Configuration Manager. The dimension values for the SlotName, SlotType and Applicable attribute values are specified in a table. You can select these from the list of available standards or enter them manually.
