What’s in Season?

Relish in the bounty of spring with seasonal, local produce and a plethora of recipes that will keep you busy all season long.

After Haley’s lecture series with the San Rafael Fire Department, both myself and the members of the department are more conscious of our nutritional choices. While on duty our energy level and mental sharpness is critical to our job performance. Haley has taught us how to make healthier choices in our food and recipes selections to support us physically and mentally. It’s not uncommon to hear department members say “Haley wouldn’t approve of that.”  She has changed the way we look at nutrition.

I had been struggling with how to get my husband and myself to consistently eat a more healthful diet. Working with Haley was great because she helped us understand what we were eating, how it was affecting our health and fitness goals and what changes we could make to most effectively meet those goals. In just a few weeks, Haley guided us through those changes and we noticed differences immediately.

Haley was really able to help me come up with a wide variety of ideas for healthy eating, incorporating greens and other necessary nutrients into my everyday diet with more ease: ideas that made day-to-day eating easier, efficient, and even cost-effective. Taking care of yourself isn’t always going to be quick and efficient, the knowledge that Haley has the ability to share can make that process easier, and more fun!

Haley is so knowledgeable and still there are no stupid questions with her. I could come to her with really basic or very technical questions and she always took the time to make sure I got my answer and learned something useful. Plus, as a somewhat recent vegetarian, she guided me through a meal plan that not only helped me get the protein I needed but keep my intake of empty carbs down.

Haley currently lives in Larkspur, California and works with clients throughout the Bay Area. She co-founded the 10 Day Health Challenge and is currently getting her Masters of Science in Holistic Nutrition from Hawthorn University.

Two cleanse-friendly recipes

Lemon-Energizer-Aid Day 1 of the two-week cleanse: going strong with no caffeine headache! I’ve been lamenting about having no coffee for two weeks… but since I have so many of you counting on me to make it through, I WILL DO IT FOR YOU! Even if it kills me. I’ve bought a few boxes of green tea and stocked up on my matcha (smoothie recipe here), Inka grain coffee, and Teechino. I should survive, but ask me tomorrow and I may have another answer. This recipe below is one from my bag of tricks. It’s nourishing in so many ways, plus it packs a punch so it will kick your booty and wake you up when you’re dragging mid-afternoon. Lemon juice is great to drink before meals to help with digestion, and it’s full of antioxidants and phytonutrients. Ginger is also a digestive aid and soothes the stomach. Ceyenne is a powerful antioxidant and a pain-reliever (anticipating headaches…). Turmeric has a warming and bittersweet flavor and is loaded with curcumin, which is what gives this spice it’s famous anti-inflammatory properties. Happy cleansing and godspeed! Ingredients: 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (or the juice from about 3 lemons depending on how much juice you can get out) 2 tsp. raw honey 1/2 tsp. ginger juice 1/4 tsp. ground turmeric 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 2 1/2 cups water A few tips: -Drink this hot or cold -For the ginger juice- you can either press your own using a garlic press (I think I pulled a muscle) or buy the bottled kind. Honestly, it tastes better if you do it yourself, but The Ginger People offers a... read more

Has your body been trying to tell you something? Maybe it’s time to listen. Join me on a 2-week whole foods cleanse starting June 1st. Improve your health, repair your digestion, and change your bad eating habits by participating in this guided cleanse. We’ll support each other and make it an enjoyable, effortless two weeks! Why cleanse? Summer is right around the corner! Cleanses are a great way to reset your system, detox, and drop some extra pounds while nourishing your body to the max. This type of cleanse removes common allergens and toxic chemicals from your diet, which will improve the immune system, flush the digestive system, and facilitate healing. Plus, you will develop better eating habits and foster a greater sense of body awareness. What kind of cleanse is it? Whole foods, whole foods, and more whole foods. We’ll be cutting out all types of refined foods, soy, dairy, sugar, gluten, alcohol and coffee (*gasp!) with an optional juice fast at the end. BUT- you’ll be provided with lots of yummy recipes, meal plans and email support. You will never go hungry. Is it safe? Absolutely. For one, refined foods shouldn’t be part of our diet anyway. Because you’re not limiting calories, you’ll have plenty of energy to go about your daily routine, feel alert, and even exercise. It’s important to be mindful that you’re eating enough, drinking a lot of water, and paying attention to symptoms such as food cravings, headaches, or constipation. Troubleshooting some of these problems will be available during the cleanse via email support. How much does it cost? It’s FREE. However, you... read more

“Love Your Mama” Granola Recipe (plus bonus interview!)

Meet Chelsea Knight: Rockstar yogi, entrepreneur, and mom! I’m so excited to introduce my dear friend for this week’s recipe (see below)- just in time for Mother’s Day! I’ve known Chelsea Knight since we were in the cradle; we’ve built an arsenal of fond memories over the last 30 years, with many shared birthday parties, sleepovers, and spring break road trips. As grown-ups, though, our joint passions for fitness and nutrition have connected us even closer. Chelsea is an utterly inspiring yoga teacher and owner of Hard Core Yoga in Eugene, OR. Plus, she offered me this killer granola recipe, and I knew I needed to feature it AND her on 18grains. Read on… _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Chels, how long have you been teaching yoga? 5 years When did you open your business? September 2011 Being a fitness professional, why is healthy eating important to you? The way we fuel our bodies has a tremendous impact on the way they function. For me, choosing the cleanest, least processed, most nutrient-rich food is the only way I’m able to operate at such a high level. I can immediately feel the impact of lesser quality foods in not only my yoga practice, but life off the mat. The ability to cope with stress, energy levels, and sleep patterns are completely linked to the foods put in our bodies. What is your go-to snack during a long day at the studio, dealing with clients, and driving kids around? I always start my day with a big green smoothie (kale, spinach, frozen berries, chia seeds, ginger, cinnamon, vegan protein powder, and water) that I bring... read more
